About Tendonitis

Tendonitis is a common sports injury that’s caused by overuse of a joint or tendon, incorrect posture, or inappropriate stretching. Tendonitis can occur in any of your tendons; however, it’s most common around:

  • Elbow (tennis/golfer’s elbow)
  • Shoulder (rotator cuff tendonitis)
  • Knee (Patellar tendonitis)
  • Achilles tendon (Achilles tendonitis)

Previously, it was thought that tendonitis was caused by inflammation but the latest research shows it results from a breakdown of the tendon tissue. This is why treatment that only focuses on reducing inflammation (RICE) provides temporary relief.

There are many factors that contribute toward developing tendonitis including:

  • Poor sports/work/ leisure techniques;
  • Muscle weakness or imbalance;
  • Poor coordination;
  • Awkward postures;
  • Stiff joints

With tendonitis, the main objective is to reduce the inflammation and irritation of the tendon. As symptoms improve, physical therapy can be very beneficial in reducing irritation via manual therapy, dry needling, shock wave, and eccentric exercises.
