What Is IMS & Dry Needling?
Intramuscular Stimulation, or IMS, is a therapeutic technique developed by Dr. Chann Gunn in the 1970s. It focuses on evaluating and treating chronic pain, which is more complex and persistent than acute pain, often lasting longer than three months.
Thin, sterile needles are inserted into key muscular trigger points and corresponding muscles. This precise needling helps relieve pain by stimulating the muscles and promoting blood flow.
Dry Needling is a modern therapeutic technique used to treat muscular pain, also known as trigger point dry needling (TPDN). It targets “myofascial pain” – pain originating from trigger points in the muscles.
Fine, stainless steel filiform needles are inserted into the skin at specific trigger points. These points are often hard muscles or knotted areas that cause pain. The needles help release these knots, relieving muscle tightness and pain.

IMS & Dry Needling Therapy Edmonton South FAQs
The number of sessions required for IMS or Dry Needling varies based on individual conditions and treatment goals. Some patients experience significant relief after just a few sessions, while others with chronic or severe pain may need a longer course of treatment. During your initial consultation at Boost Physiotherapy, our therapists will assess your specific needs and develop a personalized treatment plan, including an estimated number of sessions. Regular re-evaluations are conducted to monitor progress and adjust the treatment plan as necessary to achieve the best outcomes.
During an IMS or Dry Needling session at Boost Physiotherapy, you can expect a thorough assessment of your pain and muscle condition. Our therapist will identify trigger points and areas of tension before inserting fine needles into these specific sites. The needle insertion may cause a brief twitch response or mild discomfort, but this sensation usually subsides quickly. After the session, you may feel immediate relief or gradual improvement over the next few days as the muscles relax and heal.
Yes, IMS and Dry Needling can be effectively combined with other treatments such as physiotherapy and massage therapy. Integrating these treatments can enhance overall pain relief and recovery by addressing different aspects of musculoskeletal health. At Boost Physiotherapy, we often develop comprehensive, multi-faceted treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs, ensuring a holistic approach to pain management and rehabilitation. Combining therapies allows for more effective treatment outcomes and supports long-term health and wellness.
